Hello Lovelies! This weekend we had grand plans, but they didn't turn out the way they were supposed to, but never-the-less, it was fun. My parents and I were supposed to head out to Round Top, Texas for the 2nd Round Top Round Up antiques fair of the year, (I blogged about the 1st one here). When they picked me up on Friday night we were all geared up and ready for the next day, but on Saturday morning my mom woke up feeling poorly and there was no way we were going to force her into a 2 hour drive and hours of antique shopping in 104° heat, (we've been jokingly referring to it as "Extreme Antiquing"). So, instead we spent from 7am to 1pm watching a 5 hour marathon of 'The Rifleman'. When we all finally decided to get dressed and leave the house, we drove about 30 miles out to our favorite little restaurant for some good Southern cooking. It was like a feast, chips and salsa, fried pickles, salad, and the most AMAZING sweet potatoes. It was sooo good. I didn't take any photos, because we went after it like animals and frankly I don't want to expose you to that kind of grotesque behavior. After we ate, we decided to head out to our local antique mall to get our fix. My dad decided to sit this one out and rest his full belly in the car. I'm really glad we decided to stop because we ended up with a couple of great things. As a side note, the antique mall is so much fun. It's in an old grocery store in a strip center and is just stall after stall of odd and interesting things.

My mom, who is about a foot shorter than me, took this photo of me wearing the most fantastic Bavarian hat. Unfortunately because of my crouching and the height difference, you really can't see how great it is.
I got this wonderful little frame and promptly put a photo of my great grandmother in it. I think it's just perfect! If you've read some of my previous posts, you'll know I'm just crazy for these little brass frames. I'm always trying to find them.
I'm very excited about my new under $18 typewriter! I know I already have a beautiful little teal Olivetti, but it currently is with a friend in London, and I've so missed having one to use here. Plus the ribbon in this one still works and it's a bit more modern than my other one.
Part II: Sentimental Gifts
A few weeks back I was over at my grandparent's house and we were talking about family history and going through old photos. Well, I asked my grandmother if I could take a photo of one of the little figures in her house that has always been my favorite so I could show my husband. She told me there was no point in taking a picture of it and if I wanted it I could have it. I went round and round with her about how it belonged to her and I didn't want to take it, that I just wanted a photo. But, you know how persistent grandmothers can be, so now it's at my house. She also gave me 2 other little figures as well. She said she'd rather have me loving them everyday than her forgetting she even owned them. My grandfather also gave me loads of photos which I just can't wait to frame. One of which is in the frame in one of the previous photos.
These are my favorite little things ever. Fat little quails. There's a whole long story about why I love them so much, but I'll spare you of it. I will say, I've grown to adore them even more after finding out that my grandmother and mother made them.
She also gave me these two antique brass cranes. I need to find a place for them, as they are really lovely and graceful in person.
So that's it. All of my new old things and favorite sentimental ones...

wow, what great finds! I love having a typewriter to use (mine looks a lot like the one you just bought, maybe a little more yellowed with age :). I got mine from my grandmother after she passed away and it's great to have something of hers.
I can't believe your mom and grandma MADE those fat quails! So adorable and well done.

Rebecca- I just adore typewriters. I've been considering starting a collection, the only problem is they take up so much space. As for the fat quails, they are really well done. I had always thought she bought them, but come to find out, they are modeled from clay, then foiled and painted. I just love them.
this is so funny, but i found those exact same looking cranes on etsy the other day while looking for vintage asian stuff! i hearted them when i found them, so you can look if you don't believe me ;). good taste, brooke! i love all your other little treasures, too! aren't grandparents wonderful and sweet?
Sounds like a perfect weekend! Sentimental finds and hand-me-downs are the best :) I love the typewriter - what a great find! I didn't make it out to the Round Top Round Up either, but now that I know about it, I need to make advanced plans for next year.
Melissa- How weird! I think my grandma got them as a gift in the mid 70s. She has a whole bunch of vintage brass figures. One of my favorites is a small candy bowl in a tree with birds in the branches.
Megan- It was a good weekend! There's going to be another Round Up Sept. 28th through Oct. 1 in case you wanted to plan for that one.

Hello Penny Mae! I came across your blog and wowy wow wow! I thought it was really neat. My mom likes to look for antiques too. :o)
I love those quails! My Mimi has those and many many other little brass critters. Those are things that as dated as they can make a room I love them and can't wait for them to be in my house.
